Does anybody agree with this (women should get custody of the kids)?

I was arguing with a female housemate, who said that in court women SHOULD get custody of the children because mothers are more important than fathers, mothers give birth and have a "special bond" with the children, at the same time she claimed to be all about equality, my question is how could you possibly say you are all about equality, than say you think there should exist inequality, as in this case where the woman should have more rights, simply because she's a woman. Don't forget, that her point implies women should raise the children, supporting the traditional family structure with the stay-at-home wife and a bread winner husband, because women are 'more nurturing'. She also related to the animal kingdom.
