How do you expand using your vocabulary?

There's a lot of words I know but I don't think of using in essays without a thesaurus. I have my AP Lang exam in a few weeks and I need to work on better diction and "voice". The Princeton Review has several pages worth of exam-worthy vocab words, should I just use flash cards to get them drilled in my head?
